Shot peening

During shot peening compressive residual stress are produced in the surface layer of a material by bombarding it with steel, glass or ceramic balls or with cut wire shot. Compressive stress improves the fatigue properties of the material. Shot peening is used to improve the fatigue properties of springs, drill bits, gear wheels, aerospace components etc.
